The Umesh Chronicles is a story of growing up in 1980s middle class India. It enters the inner world of Radha, eight-years old, surrounded by parents and grandparents, and stays with her, with the thoughts and influences, and the particular emphasis on education that shapes her everyday.

Radha has little contact with Sundar, a servant boy her age growing up next to her. He runs away and when she meets him many years later, Radha is forced to consider that he may be more free than she is.

Many year later, in her thirties, in modern India, Radha thinks of Sundar and seeks him out.
The Umesh Chronicles presents two Indias living next to each other, but still communicates the special code of managing the grace of living side by side. This is the story of the soul of a nation, and a reflection on a way of being fast vanishing, perhaps vanished, with a sense of place and time which can almost be smelled. It offers an insight into the heart of calm in 80s India not seen since and replaced by a restlessness.
It is a map of the past and a sketch for the future.
